The Mudhouse: Editing Exercise

Hide the jump cut

For: Groups of 1-2
Difficulty: Beginner

Objective
This assignment teaches students how to condense sound bites and cover jump cuts.

Points to emphasize

  • Editing is about condensing time.

  • It’s okay to edit sound bites as long as you don’t change their meaning or intention.

  • The practical purpose of b-roll is to hide jump cuts.

  • Use b-roll that makes sense with what the person is saying.

  • Turn down, but don’t delete the nat sound under the interview.

Equipment: Computer, editing software, headphones

Assignment

Students must use an interview from the Mudhouse raw footage, cut it into two or more sound bites, place them sequentially on the timeline in a way that condenses the sound bite, and cover the jump cut(s) with b-roll. The final video should start and end with the person talking.
