“Flash Drive”
The following exercises and assignments use footage from the Flash Drive raw footage pack. Teachers can access the raw footage files in the “Download” tab above. Students can download the raw footage files from the student page.
Short Film
For: Groups of 1-2
Difficulty: Advanced
Objective
The assignment demonstrates a student’s ability to make creative decisions in an edit, avoid obvious production mistakes, and polish raw footage and sound into a final product. This is a difficult and comprehensive assignment. It could serve as a semester final or major class project.
Points to emphasize
Students must first sync all footage and sound manually, using the clapboard.
Watch all the footage before you start editing.
Make sure your edits have continuity. If you are doing it right, you shouldn’t notice the edit.
Complete your sound mix and color correction last.
Equipment: Computer, editing software, headphones
ASSIGNMENT
Edit the raw footage and sound files into a polished, final edit, no longer than 3 minutes.
Variation: Supply students with a music bed or sound effects to add to their project.
