pineapple whip: Editing Assignment

HIDE THE JUMP CUT

For: Groups of 1-2
Difficulty: Beginner

Objective
This assignment teaches students how to condense sound bites and cover jump cuts.

Points to emphasize

  • Editing is about condensing time.

  • It’s okay to edit sound bites as long as you don’t change their meaning or intention.

  • The practical purpose of b-roll is to hide jump cuts.

  • Use b-roll that makes sense with what the person is saying.

  • Turn down, but don’t delete the nat sound under the interview.

Equipment: Computer, editing software, headphones

Assignment

Students must use the interview with Zach from the Pineapple Whip raw footage, cut it into two or more sound bites, place them sequentially on the timeline in a way that condenses the sound bite, and cover the jump cut(s) with b-roll. The final video should start and end with the person talking.
