The Sequence

For: Groups of Three
Difficulty: Beginner

Objective
Upon completion of this lesson and the assignment that follows, students will know how to shoot a sequence made of wide, medium, and tight shots.

Points to emphasize

  • Use a tripod

  • Move around, don’t just zoom in. “Pick up sticks” (Move the tripod/camera)

  • Look for interesting shots—shots with depth, angles, dynamic lighting

  • Hold the shots for at least seven or eight seconds

Equipment: One camera, one tripod per group

Assignment

In groups of three, have everyone in the group take turns as the videographer, and shoot two three-part sequences in totally different locations: Wide-Medium-Tight. Note: Feel free to add “Extra Tight” for a fourth part of the sequence assignment. Every shot must be completely stable (shot on a tripod).
