hot glass: Editing Assignment

PROCESS video

For: Groups of 1-2
Difficulty: Beginner / Intermediate

Objective
Students will get practice in their editing software of choice and use critical thinking to make editing decisions based on an interview that explains a process.

Points to emphasize

  • Use sequences, not just shots. Remember action/reaction.

  • Don’t delete your nat sound. You may need to turn it down, but don’t delete it.

  • Avoid jump cuts and pay attention to continuity.

Equipment: Computer, editing software, headphones

Assignment

Students must use the footage from the Hot Glass raw footage pack to create a 60-90 second process video. They can use either or both of the clips of Terry and Gabe explaining the process, then use b-roll from the pack to add visuals to what Gabe and Terry are saying. No music is allowed. No effects or transitions are allowed.

Note for teachers

This same assignment can be adapted to a shooting assignment. Have students interview someone about a step-by-step process. Then have them shoot sequences of each step in the process. Then have the student do this same assignment with the footage they capture.

Example

We suggest waiting until after the students are finished to show the example.
